Initially you could only find analog guitar interfaces for iOS, but the last couple of years have brought forth plenty of digital models. Two different types of guitar/bass interfaces are available on the market:ĭigital interfaces, which connect through the dock port on your deviceĪnalog interfaces, which connect through the headphone jack on your device For that, you’ll need a dedicated guitar interface or a more fully featured audio interface that can handle not only guitar and bass connections but also microphones and sometimes even MIDI as well. In order to take advantage of the great guitar-processing apps available for the iPad and iPhone, you need a way to get the signal from your guitar or bass into your iOS device. How do you prefer to record your guitars in GarageBand? What gear do you use? Leave a comment and let me know or come join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. You can find the gear mentioned in the video here: TOOGOO(R) 3M Guitar to PC USB Recording Cable IK Multimedia iRig Pro I/O Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Some of these Lightning interfaces use the iPhone’s headphone jack as an output, which is fine as long as it has one. The guitar gets plugged into the big hole, your external speaker or headphones get plugged into the little hole, and the Lightning cable runs to your iPhone or iPad. Tap the guitar icon in the upper-left corner, then tap the sound you want to play. You can choose from acoustic or electric guitar sounds, and turn on stompbox effects to customize the sound. Play the Guitar in GarageBand for iPad Using the Guitar, you can play notes, chords, and strumming patterns. This is an inferior way of recording guitar tracks as well, but it works if you’re running on a string budget. 2) You can also purchase a Guitar to USB cable and hook your guitar directly up to GarageBand. Start playing the guitar with your amplifier close to it, and that should be enough for a very rough demo. In this video I record the acoustic guitars for my song “For the Birds” in GarageBand on my iPad, using both a large diaphragm condenser microphone and a direct line in to the audio interface. Connect your guitar to your iOS device (we’re using an iRig), get your headphones on and turn up the volume on your headphones and guitar. There are also MIDI connectors such as the iRig MIDI, which hook up MIDI keyboards, drum machines, drum pads, pedal boards and more to an iOS device. While many would argue that the only way to accurately capture an electric guitar performance is by mic’ing up your amplifier and hitting record, in my latest video I share 3 ways that you can directly input your guitar into your Mac so that you can record it in GarageBand.ĭirectly inputting (or ‘DI-ing’) your instrument in this way gives you more control over how your recording sounds if you choose to use Garageband’s built in amp designer and/or Audio Unit plug ins. If you’re a guitarist who’s just getting started with GarageBand and are dying to jump in a start recording, you may be overwhelmed with the different gear options available to you.
